Call on The Lord

by | Jul 7, 2019

A Call to Call

“Who ya gonna call?”

First Mention

Genesis 4:25-26 NKJV
[25] And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” [26] And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.

235 years of man living on earth before men began to CALL on the name of The Lord.
Seth = appointed or placed
Enosh = mortal

Genesis 12:7-8 NKJV
[7] Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. [8] And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

Genesis 13:1-4 NKJV
[1] Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. [2] Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. [3] And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, [4] to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

Genesis 21:33 NKJV
[33] Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.
Genesis 26:23-25 NKJV
[23] Then he went up from there to Beersheba. [24] And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake.” [25] So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Samuel hears God calling

1 Samuel 3:16 NKJV
[16] Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He answered, “Here I am.”
God hears the call of the righteous, but do the righteous hear the call of God?
Luke 6:46 NKJV
[46] “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
God hears Samuel

1 Samuel 12:17-18 NKJV
[17] Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking a king for yourselves.” [18] So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
God hears David

2 Samuel 22:1-7 NKJV
[1] Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. [2] And he said: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; [3] The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. [4] I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. [5] “When the waves of death surrounded me, The floods of ungodliness made me afraid. [6] The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. [7] In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry entered His ears.

Persecution for calling THE NAME

Acts 7:54-60 NKJV
[54] When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. [55] But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, [56] and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” [57] Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; [58] and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. [59] And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” [60] Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Acts 9:13-14 NKJV
[13] Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. [14] And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.

Acts 9:15-18 NKJV
[15] But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. [16] For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” [17] And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” [18] Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

Calling on The Name of Jesus without the authority of Jesus is dangerous.

Acts 19:11-16 NKJV
[11] Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, [12] so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. [13] Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” [14] Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. [15] And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” [16] Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Salvation to those who will call and respond

Joel 2:30-32 NKJV
[30] “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. [31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. [32] And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the LORD has said, Among the remnant whom the LORD calls.

Prophecy fulfilled

Acts 2:17-21 NKJV
[17] ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. [18] And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. [19] I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. [20] The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. [21] And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.’

Acts 2:36-41 NKJV
[36] “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” [37] Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” [38] Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. [39] For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” [40] And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” [41] Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

2 Timothy 2:22 NKJV
[22] Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
